You know a present is pricey when it has to be sent by private jet. Clearly not satisfied with the insurance offered by UPS, Price Azim, son of the Sultan of Brunei, took fan stalking to another level when he dispatched his own team of couriers by plane to deliver the diamond and platinum necklace and ring set to US pop diva Mariah Carey before her concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2006. She was spotted as one of the guests at his star-studded 26th birthday bash three years later. Can’t think why.
India’s Richest Man buys his wife a $60m plane
While many women would be satisfied with a budget flight on EasyJet for their birthday, petrochemical tycoon and one-time world’s richest man Mukesh Ambani took it quite a few steps further by buying his wife her own aeroplane. He presented his other half Nita with an Airbus 319 for her 44th birthday in 2007, worth a reported $60 million. He already owned his own Boeing Business Jet 2 so it was ridiculous to think they could both share one plane, can you imagine the arguments? But then he is worth $27 billion, so I guess he could afford it.

There must be plenty of husbands scrabbling around for 40th birthday ideas who have fallen back on the old favourite of buying their wife a diamond. Few have done it quite as extravagantly as Hollywood legend Richard Burton, however, who splashed out more than $1m back in 1972 on a pear-shaped diamond for his on-off wife Elizabeth Taylor on her 40th birthday. They later divorced, remarried, divorced again and she hocked the ring for $5m six years later. Charming.
