Amphibians

Several species of amphibians have been sent into space, such as frogs, toads and newts.
Cats

French scientists launched two cats into space in 1963.
Chimpanzees

The first chimp sent into space was named Ham and he took his trip in 1961.
Dogs

The most famous dog was Laika who was sent aboard Sputnik 2.
Fish

Several species of fish, including jellyfish, have been sent into space as well for experimentation and to observe how they behave in zero gravity.
Cockroach

Another important insect that was launched into space was the cockroach. In 2007, it became the first animal to give live birth in space.
Fruit Flies

The very first animals to be sent into space, way back in 1947, was a bunch of fruit flies.
Monkeys

The most commonly used is the Rhesus monkey and in fact that was the first type of monkey sent to space, in 1949.
Rabbit

Rabbits have only been sent into space a few times, but they still made it! The first one was launched by the Soviets in 1959.
Water Bears

Water bears are microscopic animals that are known for being some of the toughest creatures on Earth, able to withstand very harsh conditions.
Rodents

Several rodents have made the trip from mice to rats to guinea pigs.
Tortoise

The Soviet Union also launched the first tortoise into space back in 1968. Later, in 1975 Soviets sent Soyuz 20 which carried more tortoises and ended up setting a duration record for animals in space with 90.5 days.
Spiders

The first spiders were sent into space in 1972.
Nematodes

A locker containing some of these guys was the only thing that survived the 2003 Columbia disaster alive.
